A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. In other words, an organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. Thus, the term is conditional both on the circumstances and the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animals, and biotin and vitamin D are required in the human diet only in certain circumstances. By convention, the term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals (which are inorganic), essential fatty acids or essential amino acids (which are needed in larger amounts than vitamins), nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health, but are otherwise required less often. Thirteen vitamins are presently universally recognized.

Vitamins are classified by their biological and chemical activity, not their structure. Thus, each "vitamin" refers to a number of vitamer compounds that all show the biological activity associated with a particular vitamin. Such a set of chemicals are grouped under an alphabetized vitamin "generic descriptor" title, such as "vitamin A", which includes the compounds retinal, retinol, and four known carotenoids. Vitamers by definition are convertible to the active form of the vitamin in the body, and are sometimes inter-convertible to one another, as well.

Vitamins have diverse biochemical functions. Some have hormone-like functions as regulators of mineral metabolism (e.g. vitamin D), or regulators of cell and tissue growth and differentiation (e.g. some forms of vitamin A). Others function as antioxidants (e.g. vitamin E and sometimes vitamin C). The largest number of vitamins (e.g. B complex vitamins) function as precursors for enzyme cofactors, that help enzymes in their work as catalysts in metabolism. In this role, vitamins may be tightly bound to enzymes as part of prosthetic groups: for example, biotin is part of enzymes involved in making fatty acids. Alternately, vitamins may also be less tightly bound to enzyme catalysts as coenzymes, detachable molecules which function to carry chemical groups or electrons between molecules. For example, folic acid carries various forms of carbon group – methyl, formyl and methylene - in the cell. Although these roles in assisting enzyme-substrate reactions are vitamins' best-known function, the other vitamin functions are equally important.

Until the mid-1930s, when the first commercial yeast-extract and semi-synthetic vitamin C supplement tablets were sold, vitamins were obtained solely through food intake, and changes in diet (which, for example, could occur during a particular growing season) can alter the types and amounts of vitamins ingested. Vitamins have been produced as commodity chemicals and made widely available as inexpensive semisynthetic and synthetic-source multivitamin dietary supplements, since the middle of the 20 century.

The term vitamin was historically derived from "vitamine," a combination word from vita and amine, meaning amine of life, because it was suggested in 1912 that the organic micronutrient food factors which prevented beriberi and perhaps other similar dietary-deficiency diseases, might be chemical amines. This proved incorrect for the micronutrient class, and the word was shortened to vitamin.

What is the best vitamin for a woman to take?
Q. I am a 30 year old woman on a diet and I was wondering the best vitamin for a woman my age to take. I just want a one a day vitamin preferably and not a whole bunch of bottles to have to carry around with me. I also cannot take the vitamins for the increased energy due to sleep problems. I cant have anything with caffine.

A. By the best vitamins I imagine you mean organic natural vitamins and not the synthetic stuff. Organic are gentle on the stomach and have a higher absolution rate. I would go with Nutrilite. They have organic farms in Washington State and California and were the first supplement company. Go to and click on vitamins then Women's Health. For a woman above 30, don't settle for one multivitamin. If you don't want to carry around a bunch of vitamins, get the Simply Nutrilite Women s Supplement Pack. The vitamins are pre-packaged in little sets of three so when you leave home, you just grab a pack. The pack contains a calcium, omega 3s, and a daily multi.

How much vitamin A, in a day, is considered toxic?
Q. I heard that Vitamin A toxicity can occur at doses of 15000 IU in a day? Just curious, how many percent of the recommended daily intake is that? An 8 ounce glass of carrot juice contains about 630% of the recommended daily intake, is this over 15000 IU? Is there an equation to convert IU to the percentage? What is IU in general? Thanks for your time!

A. The recommended daily intake of Vitamin A is 3000IU for men and 2333IU for women. A safe limit for most people is 1000IU to 25000IU per day, depending on which research you use. The Vitamin A upper limit for those over 65 and with liver problems is 1000-15000IU/day. Keep in mind that the RDA (recommended daily allowance) is usually the absolute minimum suggested for proper nutrition, so exceeding the RDAs a little is not usually a risk. Check with a medical professional before taking action. The 630% should not be a concern. Much of the Vitamin A in carrots comes from beta carotene, which the body converts into Vita A as needed. Getting your Vita A from beta carotene is a good way to avoid getting "too much" Vitamin A, since your… [cont.]
