In linguistics and grammar, a pronoun (Lat: pronomen) is a pro-form that substitutes for a noun (or noun phrase) with or without a determiner, such as you and they in English. The replaced phrase is called the antecedent of the pronoun.

For example, consider the sentence "Lisa gave the coat to Phil." All three nouns in the sentence can be replaced by pronouns: "She gave it to him." If the coat, Lisa, and Phil have been previously mentioned, the listener can deduce what the pronouns she, it and him refer to and therefore understand the meaning of the sentence; however, if the sentence "She gave it to him." is the first presentation of the idea, none of the pronouns have antecedents, and each pronoun is therefore ambiguous. Pronouns without antecedents are also called unprecursed pronouns. English grammar allows pronouns to potentially have multiple candidate antecedents. The process of determining which antecedent was intended is known as Anaphore Resolution.

What is the best site to learn about pronouns in the Japanese language?
Q. I am currently teaching myself Japanese in preparation for me going there in 21 months time. However, I'm finding it pretty difficult to get my head around the lack of pronouns. Does anyone know a really good website that explains the structure of the Japanese spoken language in Lehmann's terms please? Especially with regards to the lack of pronouns, and the subtle differences between wa and ga in sentences. Thanks.

A. In languages in which the pronounced (not just written) form of the verbs are different, there is a strong tendency NOT to use pronouns in utterances of neutral style and emphasis. In Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian the conjugations of the verb will make it clear which person is meant. Will it sound "stupid" if you use the pronoun? It will not sound correct. People will understand you, but the pronouns are used only for emphasis or stylistic reasons. For neutral utterances, you should practice NOT using the pronouns, as that is the usage which sounds most natural to native speakers. In some cases, the verb conjugation is not ambiguous. For example, in the Spanish imperfect, the first person singular and the third person singular are… [cont.]

Michelangelo dedicated to him over three hundred sonnets and constituting the largest sequence of poems composed by him Some modern commentators assert that the relationship was merely a Platonic affection even suggesting that Michelangelo was seeking a surrogate son However their homoerotic nature was recognized in his own time so that a decorous veil was drawn across them by his grand nephew Michelangelo the Younger who published an edition of the poetry in 1623 with the gender of pronouns changed the early British homosexual activist undid this change by translating the original sonnets into English and writing a two volume biography published in 1893
