What does a pharmacy tech do for an insurance company?
Q. I am a certified pharmacy tech and have an interview with Humana Thursday. What would my job entail? I don't want to look like an idiot when I go to the interview and they ask me if I know what I am there for. I know it is an office job, and I know I would have to use the computer and call doctors and pharmacies and insurance companies, but what else would I be doing?

A. Most likely you will assigned to the insurance company "pharmacy help desk". Your duties would include resolving problems. During the prescription online adjudication process claims are sometimes rejected by the insurance company. The pharmacy employee calls the insurance company "pharmacy help desk" to resolve rejections. Some common reasons for rejection that have to be resolved: NDC not covered Refills not covered Too soon to refill Patient not covered Invalid person code Insurance company computer unavailable for claim processing.

How do I apply for a pharmacy internship job?
Q. I have accepted to pharmacy school and am planning on working at a retail pharmacy, preferably Walgreens due to location, next summer. Thanks for your time.

A. First check with your school. Network the neighborhood pharmacy cvs walgreens great start. I am a Pharmacy Tech. It is hard and fast pace. Try to get a pharmacist or someone to take you under their wing so to speak. You will do better than I did being in pharmacy school and all. You will do fine. I like the street level but I really want the hospital and less public contact.

A. It varies from state to state, but I think the normal requirements are 2 years of work in a pharmacy or 2-3000 work hours on the job (rough equivalent of 2 years, forgive me for not being precise). It would be a great prospect for a future pharmacist, but you should know that you do not need to become a tech to get experience in pharmacy at all. If you're still in highschool, visit your local hospital and set up a meeting with the clinical pharmacist or director there, explain that you're interested in entering the pharmacy program at the college you plan on attending and more often than not, they will schedule you to shadow them for a day and take you around to tour the hospital pharmacist's duties (if you're truly interested, they might… [cont.]

How Medical or Pharmacy schools look on those who transferred from 2 year college to University?
Q. My daughter is planning to transfer to UC from community college with biology major. She fulfilled her requirements in CC which means that when she later apply to Pharmacy or Medical school, they would notice that all their prerequisites have been taken in CC. Should she retake these classes in the University or not? (O-Chem, Biology, etc.). Will it be even possible?

A. It's not frowned upon in the least. In today's world their are many non-traditional students..some of us may need to work, therefore we spend time in a less expensive cc school. Or there are those that trashed early education and need to pull rank before getting into a university. What 's important is the progress made and the ability to keep it steady. They take note of this...If you think your doctor was an A student think again, chances are he spent time in a cc. or had freshman probation. I've made many mistakes...leading me to one of the top medical universities. They understand more then you know. Bottom line ...if she's smart, she'll make it...& should be proud of where she came from. What it comes down to is ability,… [cont.]

They go get a big bottle of the stuff which they've purchased from the drug maker, say 300 pills, count out your 30 and then bottle them and put the other 270 back for the next people who need it. They then apply a label with your personal info to the bottle along with instructions on how often to take them. Your info should then go into their computer so that they can keep track of what you've been on and how often and what Dr.s have written the Rxs for you. Most normal pharmacies do not mix up lotions and such- that's known as a compounding pharmacy which aren't very common and don't give out meds like your local Rite Aid or CVS or whatever. A. Unfortunately, not any more... You once could do this easily, but the DEA is cracking down on those businesses and imprisoning those doctors for lengthy periods of time. Also, most of these ops are fly-by-nights who will either send you counterfeit (and possibly dangerous) pills, use your credit card to commit fraud, or they are fronts put up by the DEA to catch people who traffick in these drugs. Another problem is that if you can find a pharmacy that will sell you schedule III drugs, US Customs is well aware of the names of these companies and will seize packages sent from them. They also may send the police to your door, which really sucks and is never good! The only legitimate pharmacy I know of is drugstore.com, but they do require… [cont.]

What are the negative aspects of pharmacy?
Q. My cousin has an interview for pharmacy in a week. One of the popular questions at the interview is "what are the negative aspects of pharmacy" When I first heard this question, I didn't know how to answer it. Since its an interview, we can't say something very negative else the interviewer might ask why she even chose to pursue pharmacy then. So the answer has to be something negative about pharmacy but not too negative so the interviewer doens't say why you even wnat to be a pharmacist then.

We have had that issue at 2 retail companies that Ihave worked for, and in multiple locations within this state for both companies.

A. You should take the preparation courses for the pharmacy school now, like chemistry and anything else in medicine. Then you should have a record of being a volunteer in a hospital or clinic with some pharmacy exposure. You should really call or go into Pharmacies in your town and ask the Phamacist these same questions and get the best information. There are some employment agencies which specialize in careers in medical jobs, so call and ask them how you should pursue employment. Good luck.

A. Actually, there are degrees offered in pharmacology. Here's a list of universities offering graduate study in the area. To get in to these programs you need a good background in chemistry and biology. As a pharmacist, you'd be the person sitting behind the counter, filling prescriptions. With a pharmacology degree, you'd actually be doing research on whether or not drugs like Viagra or Prozac are effective for companies like Merck or GlaxoSmithKline. As far as actual jobs go, there are high paying jobs everywhere for pharmacists. You could work for Walgreen's or your local drug store. A. You really should look at the requirements the pharmacy school has that you plan on attending, as they're not all the exact same. The school I go to requires as speech class, economics, and some humanities for acceptance in addition to more standard classes. So, what a good major to set you up for pharmacy school? Biology or chemistry are probably the most fitting. In those majors you will have all necessary chemistry (including organic chemistry), biology, English, anatomy and physiology, and math taken care of. However, in my class there are people that have business degrees, and engineering degrees. They just made sure that in addition to all the classes they needed for those degrees that they took bio and chem classes too. … [cont.]

Q. What courses do you need to complete for admission to pharmacy school? What is a good major for pre-pharmacy? Is it acceptable (if not favorable) to major in English? Thanks! specific classes please!

… [cont.]

How much money do pharmacy technician's make per hour in California? Is it easy to get hired as one?
Q. I'm thinking about going to school as a pharmacy tech with my boyfriend. But we're curious how much pharmacy tech's make hourly in CA.

A. Dont go to school for this, apply to all the retail chains, Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, Rite-Aid, they will train you on the job and pay you for it. If you can just get your foot in the door at any of these companies, you can become certified, or choose not to get certified, while being paid. You'll start around $10/hour.
