Are there any organizations that help others start and run new companies?
Q. Meaning an organization that helps someone start a company not only financially but also gives them advice through market research and or other methods. Also organizations that help companies until they get on their feet. I'm looking for an organization that you can take an idea to and they help you make it happen (turn it into a reality).

A. Go to and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

What organizations can I volunteer at that do not deal with the needy?
Q. Before the summer ends, I would like to do some volunteering with organizations that do not deal with the needy. I do not want to work for the homeless, the handicap, handicap children or the elderly (handicap or not). I also hate calling folks on the phone for blood or donations. My only explanation that I can give for my avoidance is that I do not have the patience or I am afraid that I would get too concerned about there lifes. I simply do not want to get involve or make any sort of "friendships" that may carry long time commitments. Thanks

How can I find out about organizations sponsored by AmeriCorps in my area?
Q. I was recently informed that if you do one year of community service for AmeriCorps you receive an educational award. I desperately need money for college and would enjoy helping organizations in my community but I can't find any programs in my county or those surrounding me. I called AmeriCorps to ask them how I would find charities in my area and they said to look on the website, which I did but again, there doesn't seem to be programs in my county. Is there some other organization I could call to find out about the locations of these organizations? Any other information about AmeriCorps would be greatly appreciated. How many volunteer hours are put in each week? It's going to be tough for me to attend school, work and volunteer but I… [cont.]

A. Most AmeriCorps programs are full time so you can't work, go to school and do AmeriCorps...you can only do one at a time, unless maybe you have a night job. You have to put in 1,700 volunteer hours in 1 year to get your $4,725 education award and you do get paid, but it's not much. There are 3 programs: AmeriCorps*NCCC, where you travel around the US and do a lot of hands on work...you don't have to have a degree. AmeriCorps*Vista...where you stay in one place, you already have to have a degree. AmeriCorps state and national, those you mostly stay in one place, and don't always have to have a degree, these are sometimes part time too. These are usually hands on, like fire-fighting and forestry, but sometimes habitat for humanity. You… [cont.]

Q. Im thirteen and would really like to go to a different country such as Africa or China and help less fortunate then me. I have been trying to research but all of the organizations i have found require you to be at least 16 or 18 years old. Does anyone have any advice?
Asked by Hannah B - Mon Feb 11 16:58:30 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At 13, no international program is going to take you unless maybe your parents go to. A better is idea is to engage in activities that will make you a better candidate for volunteering internationally when you are older, like working in HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns, learning another language well enough to work in, joining FFA, working with immigrants, etc. Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by volunteer placement agencies, and how you can engage in activities now to make you an attractive candidate some day: Even when you turn 18, you are going to be too young to volunteer for groups that send skilled volunteers to the developing world and *don't* charge the volunteers for the… [cont.]

What are some non profit animal focused organizations?
Q. What are some trustworthy non profit organizations that you know for sure are worth donating money to and that will use 100% of the donations toward the cause of protecting animals? I'm looking for organizations dealing with both pets and wild animals, animal abuse, endangered species, etc. I'm planning on starting my own non profit 'campaign' of sorts to support a new non profit organization like this each month. I'm starting with animals, but don't want to donate money to someone who will use it on something completely unhelpful to the actual cause.

A. Ok I have to let you know one fact-there are NO charitable organizations/non profits where 100% of the donations go to the actual cause. I look for a range of 80-99%, some people are comfortable going as low as 75% but not me. They may have some events where 100% of what they raise in donations goes to the cause but those are usually underwrtitten by a large donor. Unfortunately they have expenses too-salaries/insurance/ov erhead/office supplies-you know the same stuff for profit companies use. Check your yellow pages or online for a local chapter of what i consider are the best options below: American Council for the Blind-Guide Dogs paws peta humane Society Check on any charity through the better business bureau. A. I've got in contact with a couple NGO's that are there right now for volunteering...but it's almost impossible to volunteer there if you aren't a professional (doctor, nurse, etc...) b/c a lot of the activities that are needed there usually go to locals b/c they have heavy unemployment...so they pay a lot of people that live in certain area's of Darfur to do a lot of the work that you are looking to volunteer for.

A. Yikes. That didn't sound good. Schools of that level like to see that you're really dedicated to something you do - they like to see that you put a lot of time and effort into it, and stuck with it for several years. If you have anything like that, you should definitely include it. Ahh, it's bad to just add "extra things", if they honestly didn't have a big impact on your life. Get involved with something that you're actually really interested in, not just what will look better in the end. You'll be happier and better off that way. However, some things which DO look good would be the work in the pharmacy (excellent), any leadership positions you may have, or community service. Graduate schools love to see community service. A. Charity shops are the main place to donate unwanted gifts. You could decide to spread the donations throughout a few months. I guess they get overwhelmed in early January. All the charities with shops appeal for unwanted gifts to be donated after Xmas. Very few charity shops can take electrical goods. Best to check first. Those that can usually have someone who s qualified to test the items and make sure they re safe to use. Some charity shops will take them, not to sell in the shop but to be sold to recycling schemes or another use found for them. How do you adopt a road? Are there civic organizations or individuals in your community who have adopted roads
Q. How do you adopt a road? Are there civic organizations or individuals in your community who have adopted roads for cleanup? How does a person or organization qualify to adopt a road? What procedures are followed during clean-up? (How often does clean-up occur, how are the workers protected from traffic along the roadway, what do they do with the garbage they collect, etc) If civic organizations or individuals don t adopt roads, who does the cleanup, and how is it paid for?

A. I think it depends on which county's road you want to adopt. Each government agency has different requirements, but for most "adoptions," it's really a matter of keeping it clean. Here's some information from King's County's (Seattle, WA) Adopt-A-Road program: About the Adopt-A-Road Program The King County Adopt-A-Road Program is a litter-reduction campaign designed to remove litter and debris from county roads and improve the quality of the environment. The first Adopt-a-Road cleanup took place in September 1991. Since then, 185 groups now participate in this effort to cleanup county roads.
