A. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a class of powerful antidepressant drugs prescribed for the treatment of depression. They are particularly effective in treating atypical depression, and have also shown efficacy in helping people who want to quit smoking. Due to potentially lethal dietary and drug interactions, MAOIs had been reserved as a last line of defense, used only when other classes of antidepressant drugs (for example selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants) have been tried unsuccessfully. Recently, however, a patch form of the drug selegiline, called Emsam, was developed. It was approved for use by the FDA on February 28, 2006.[1] When applied transdermally the drug does not enter the… [cont.]

Is prozac an MAOI inhibitor?
Q. Just concerned b/c I need some cold/flu meds and they warn against mixing those with maoi inhibitors. And I am on prozac. Thanks !

A. No it is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). Hardly anyone uses MAOI's anymore as they have such bad side effects and the patients have to be careful with using other meds and avoiding certain foods.

What is an MAOI inhibitor?
Q. i have seen warnings on certain over-the-counter medications, like cough syrup, not to use it if you are taking an MAOI inhibitor. my mom told me a long time ago, "if you don't know what it is, then you're not taking it". (i think saying "i don't know" would have sufficed.) anyway...can anyone tell me what an MAOI inhibitor is? Thanks! thanks...and now i know it's an "MAO inhibitor" or an "MAOI". Not "MAOI Inhibitor"! anyway...I was gonna choose best answer already, but yahoo scolded me and told me to wait 4 hours. :P

A. Yep, monoamine oxidase inhibitor as already mentioned. The primary treatment areas are as an anti-depressant (e.g., clorgyline) and anti-Parkinsonism (e.g., selegiline). However, these compounds are both irreversible and can lead to side-effects that have the potential to be life-threatening. Due to their irreversible nature, natural ingestion of sympathomimetic amines like tyramine leads to a build up of nor-adrenaline in the periphery by various displacement mechanisms. This can cause a severe, acute hypertension due to alpha-1 receptor agonism. This is colloquially called the 'Cheese effect' Tyramine is found in foodstuff like mature cheeses and red wine. A reversible MAOI like moclobemide can be displaced by the ingested tyramine… [cont.]

Is Citalopram a MAOI inhibitor?
Q. is it? I need doctors or nurses only on this one?

A. Citalopram is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is very important to NOT take "Celexa" with a MAOI!!! There is plenty of information on the internet just do a search of the drug and you will read all the information you need to know. Hope this helps, and good luck!

After all these years, what is happening to my mind?! I feel like I'm losing myself.?
Q. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder when I was 12. At 19, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I've been on every anti-depressant, mood stabilizer and anti-anxiety (benzos) medication that you can think of except MAOI Inhibitors. Last year, while unemployed and extremely depressed, I became quite the heavy drinker. It helped aleve my anxiety. But, I realized my problem and I quit. My psychiatrist at the time wanted me to have Electric Shock Therapy because he said I was untreatable. I told him prett much to go "F* himself". I saw what ECT did to my father. So, I went and got two "second" opinions from two different psychiatrists. One told me that I was NOT bipolar and suffered from an anxiety disorder. The other told me I had… [cont.]

A. Ok, well seeing the new psychiatrist will be very helpful, explain everything to him/her and he/she will be able to figure out what is wrong. I know that you are scare, I suggest for right now you just try to relax and think about how much better it will be when you see the new psychiatrist, that should help you make it through the next few days 'til the appointment with him/her. Not weaning you off the medication was wrong of him, at least you are back on it. Good Luck, and I promise that it will get better soon, only two weeks and 1 day until everything gets better.

Why do MAOI antidepressants take so long to start working? Specifically Emsam (Selegiline).?
Q. I was prescribed Emsam (Selegiline transdermal patch) for depression ~1 week ago. It is an MAO inhibitor. According to my doc, it could take up to 3 weeks to start working. A study I found online ( shows minimal effects over placebo after one week, but it really doesn't start working until 3-4 weeks or even longer. What is the chemical/physiological reason for this delay?

Q. My wife has bronchitis and she takes regular medication called lexapro, lamictal, and seroquel for bipolar disorder. She recently was told to buy robitussin cough and congestion syrup for her throat. It says on the bottle not to take this with maoi's (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) and certain drugs for depression and psychiatric emotional conditions. the cough syrup is just a cough suppressant and expectorant. is it ok to take this syrup with the medications.
Asked by Tiggerdn - Sat Jan 26 01:11:47 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am not a doctor but I did some studies with dextromethorphan (the active ingredient in Robitussin DM) in college and would think that it would be ok for her to take any Robitussin formula (or other cough medication) that doesn't have dextromethorphan in it. Dextromethorphan is a narcotic and should definately be avoided while on other medications that mess with your brain chemistry. At the very least. Talk to your pharmacist. They should tell you if there is a direct connection to your question.

Is MAO inhibitor the most dangerous prescribing drug alive, worst than heroin?
Q. monoamine oxidase inhibitor is a drug given for mood disorders such as depression etc. It is also a drug given for parkinsons disease. however, this drug is last when almost all medications for mood doesn't work, even tricyclics. My friend is taking insocarboxazaid, known as Marplan (MAO inhibitor) and she cannot eat MOST foods and the diet is very strict. If by accident she ate the wrong food such as cheese, my friend is dead in less than 5 minutes. Because it suddently increases blood pressure to a lethal amount in seconds, causing a heart attack. My friend has to carry a LONG list of foods she cannot eat every time she shops for food. This drug is very very dangerous! how could doctors prescribe these stuff to patients? you would need… [cont.]
