Can ammonium sulfate be contained in a general fertilizer or is it a separate product?
Q. A general fertilizer being one with Nitrogen , Phosphorus and Potassium. Could ammonium sulfate comprise a portion of the Nitrogen? Or is it a separate product?

A. No it's sold separately like Sulfate of Potash and is primarily used to improve the acidic levels in soils. If you're in the UK, Bowers or Westland sell them in value pack cartons.

How do you calculate the concentration of ammonium and sulfate ions?
Q. A solution is prepared by dissolving 12.1 g ammonium sulfate in enough water to make 100.0 mL of stock solution. A 13.00 mL sample of this stock solution is added to 58.00 mL of water. Calculate the concentration of ammonium ions and sulfate ions in the final solution. Thank you!

How to find the molar mass of ammonium sulfate?
Q. Err, I tried looking up this question and it keeps saying (NH4)2SO4 But where thee heck did the two come from?! Ammonium is NH4 +1 Sulfate is SO4 -2 Do you always switch the powers? I don't get it D: I really need to figure this out in order to finish my chemistry homework T-T If not, it's death of Dani. Help??
Asked by Dani [ ] - Mon Mar 8 21:26:24 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. NH4 has a posotive charge of 1. there are 2 NH4's. This makes the total posotive charge +2. SO4 has a negative charge of -2. There is one SO4. this makes the total Negative charge -2. +2 -2 =0 this is good. a perfect octet has been achieved. however this is completely unrelated to the molar mass. To find the molar mass, add 2 Mole of nitrogen, 4 moles of hydrogen (NH4)v2 then add 1 mole Sulfur and 4 moles Oxygen (SO4) Add all those moles up and you get the molar mass of Ammonium Sulfate. (NH4)v2SO4

A. "In chemistry, fractional crystallization is a method of refining substances based on differences in solubility. If two or more substances are dissolved in a solvent, they will crystallize out of solution (precipitate) at different rates. Crystallization can be induced by changes in concentration, temperature or other means. A process by which a chemical compound is separated into components by crystallization. In fractional crystallization the compound is mixed with a solvent, heated, and then gradually cooled so that, as each of its constituent components crystallizes, it can be removed in its pure form from the solution" (NH4)2SO4: Solubility in water 70.6 g/100 mL (0 C) 74.4 g/100 mL (20 C) 103.8 g/100 mL (100 C)[ NaCl… [cont.]

Why can't ammonium sulfate be directly added to a phosphate buffer?
Q. Why can't ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) be directly added to a 15 mM pH 7.5 phosphate buffer made from KH2PO4 and titrated with KOH? Specifically, for a class experiment, the effect of 1M ammonium sulfate on 15 mM pH 7.5 phosphate buffer on its pH is supposed to be tested. I know the ion effects will drive the pH down, but in the instructions it mentions that the solution cannot be made simply by adding the correct amount of solid ammonium sulfate to a stock solution of phosphate buffer. No explanation is given, and I can't really come up with one.

How many grams of ammonium sulfate are needed to make a 0.25 L solution at a concentration of 6 M?
Q. I could not find it in my chemistry book. I need help or guidance of how to do these kind of problems. It is a molarity type problem.
Asked by Kewl Kid. - Wed Mar 10 17:33:20 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Whenever working with solutions, moles of solute = Molarity of solute x L of solution moles (NH4)2SO4 = M (NH4)2SO4 x L (NH4)2SO4 = (6)(0.25) = 1.5 moles (NH4)2SO4 The molar mass of (NH4)2SO4 = 2N (2 x 14.0) + 8H (8 x 1.0) + S (32.1) + 4 O (4 x 16.0) = 132.1 g. 1.5 moles (NH4)2SO4 x (132.1 g (NH4)2SO4 / 1 mole (NH4)2SO4) = 200 g (NH4)2SO4

Help balancing the equation ammonium sulfate plus potassium phosphate?

A. forget about rowan.. he's just desperate for the 2 points... ammonium sulfate is (NH4)2SO4 barium chloride is BaCl2 if you want the equation for a reaction of the two... if they are dissolved in water... then (NH4)2SO4 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) ---> BaSO4(s) + 2 NH4Cl (aq) they key here is everything is soluble in water except BaSO4.. which then precipitates out. IF BaSO4 was soluble in water, then there would be no reaction.

Q. How many hydrogen atoms are present in a formula unit of ammonium sulfate?
Asked by Brooke - Sun Nov 9 17:42:31 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The formula for ammonium sulfate is (NH4)2SO4 From that you can see that each unit of the compound has 8 hydrogens in it. There are two NH4 units. The 2 is the subscript for everything inside the parenthesis. If by formula unit you mean a gram formula weight (aka mole), then there will be 8 moles of hydrogen atoms in 1 mole of ammonium sulfate.

A. (NH4)2SO4 Nitrogen= -6 The two on the outside of the parentheses indicate that the ammonium ion must have a new charge of plus 2. Hydrogen x8= +8. So nitrogen must be minus 6.
