Birth Control- Aviane, Loestrin 21, or Norgestimate/Ethinyl Estradiol?
Q. Hi everyone! I'm looking into what birth control to switch to and was wondering if anyone has tried any of these and would tell me how it worked for you? I'm particularly interested in a birth control that won't negatively effect my mood or cause depression- as was the case with my last birth control (yaz). Also, comments on how these effect weight/skin would also be helpful. Thanks!

A. You may have any oral contraceptive. It is not possible to know which one is best for you beforehand. They may increase your weight. They may decrease acne.

Does switching to a higher dosage of birth control cause weight gain?
Q. I am switching from ortho tricyclen lo to trinessa because it is cheaper. Will trinessa make me gain more weight? I noticed that the amount of norgestimate in the two are the same but there is .01mg more of ethinyl estradiol in the trinessa. Could that cause weight gain?

A. I found the higher the hormone level (the estrogen level) the more water retention you get

Is there a European version of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo?
Q. I am on my last pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which I have been taking regularily for about 2 years. I currently live in Greece and am wondering if there is an equivalent birth control distributed here in Europe. I am not wanting to stray too far from the Ortho Lo as I like the lower dosage (25mcg) of estrogen and the weekly increase in the dosage of norgestimate (180 to 215 to 250 mcg). Can anyone help with brand names or similar suggestions? Thanks.

A. I'm currently live in Germany and when I first came here I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen lo as well. I'm not sure if there is an exact equivalent but now I've been using Yasmin for two years and I feel the same way on it as I did with the ortho. Yasmin is also a low dosed pill.

are there any birth control pill that DON'T cause forms of reproductive cancers?
Q. Currently I'm on Tri-Sprintec, looked it up today and found info saying "Estradiol and norgestimate increases your risk of developing endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that may lead to cancer of the uterus." Those are the hormones used in the bc. With that said, is there a bc pill that doesn't cause cancer? Brand recommendations would be great. Thx!

A. Not sure, but if you're going to get a reproductive cancer, uterine is the best, because the symptom is bleeding, which is seen immediately.

4 month expired birth control pills still effective?
Q. Birth control pill question here. I take Tri-cyclen and a few days ago I started my new pack. I was really busy so I wasn't able to buy them until day 3 so I was taking the ones I had left over from my backup collection. The thing is I only now realized that they are expired for 4 months... So the first 2 pills that I took were expired. The 3rd one I took was fine. My question is, are they still effective? How will this affect my period? Will I start on time as I usually do or will I start later? Earlier? The 2 pills that were expired were the white pills, 0.180mg norgestimate / 0.035gm Ethinl estradiol. I hope someone can help me out here. Thanks! Kathy

A. hi Kathy, I called my Pharmacist for you. She said you are safe. She also had some interesting warnings too. 1. do not get any birth control from mexico ever!!! They scratch out the expiration dates on the packaging inside on the pill boxes themselves! She had this happen to her. 2. The pharmacy rarely sells expired BC pills. If it happens return them ASAP for new ones NO problem. 3. Just for this month you should probably use extra protection if you are concerned about getting pregnant. Hope this helps you out, Carol

Delaying my period with BC pills?
Q. I posted earlier about wishing to delay my period a few days and got several good answers including a couple about using BC pills to delay my period. To continue my question... my BC pill dispenser is divided into four parts. The white pills have 0.180 mg norgestimate and 0.025mg ethinyl estradiol. Light blue pills have 0.215mg norgestimate with 0.025mg ethinyl estradiol. Dark blue pills have 0.250mg norgestimate with 0.025mg ethinyl estradiol. And of course the green sugar placebo pills. Which pill is best for countering the onset of my period? Which should I take when my current pack runs out? Do i just start from the beginning of the new pack? Or will the higher dosage pills of norgestimate work better?

A. The best kind of birth control pill for delaying a period would be something like Ortho-Cept (which is not a triphasic pill like the one you take) but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

PCOS and Birth Control, which do you take? ?
Q. I just want to hear from other YAHOO users about if they have PCOS, what they can tell me about it (if anyone else has symptoms beyond irregular periods, such as heart palpitations, insulin resistance, etc...) Also, what is your most effective treatment? What type of birth control do you take? I just started taking norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol, triphasic) whatever that means haha I haven't been to med school (yet.) Thanks and Happy Holidays to all.

A. Birth control is the WORST thing you can do for PCOS. Not only does it worsen our insulin resistance, but it also makes our hormone irregularities worse. Recent studies have shown that birth control pills makes PCOS worse. The best thing you can do is get off the BCP's immediately. Controlling your insulin resistance can be done by eating a low GI diet, exercise and herbs that control your blood sugar or insulin sensitizing medication like Metformin.

A. Best to use the monophasic pills (same dose for 3 weeks). If not, then you should take the highest dose and continue taking it until you want to get your period. So after 7 days, you'll need to open a new pack to get the highest dose. It's a real waste. Ask your doctor for a few sample packs of the monophasic pills. It'll be free and you can postpone your period for several weeks. The reason why your pack has the varying levels of hormones is to be closer to your "normal" cycle. Supposedly gives you less side effects because it's "almost like not being on the pill." I've postponed my period many many times when going on vacation. The one time I tried using the tri-phasic pack, I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding. That's why I… [cont.]

birth control pill question?
Q. My doctor recently put my on birth control due to my irregular and painful periods. I am about to start taking MonoNessa (same thing as Ortho-Cyclen and contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol). I am slightly worried about side effects because I have seen some negative reviews. Also I have heard from some people that it treats acne and i have also heard that it makes it worse. What side effects can I expect? Also, is it true that this medication makes your breasts bigger? Also, anyone who also takes this, your personal experience with the medication would be appreciated.

Changing birth control? Do I need extra protection?
Q. First off, I'm 26 and married, so not worried about STDs, etc. I've been taking Ortho-Tri-Cyclen for 11 months and in 1 more month, I'll be switching to Cilest. (I live in Austria now and they don't have Ortho-Tri-Cyclen here.) I've heard that if you switch types of birth control, then you should use extra protection, but I'm not sure if this applies to my case or not. In Ortho-Tri-Cyclen there is: week 1: 0.180mg norgestimate (progesteren) 0.035mg ethinyl estradiol (EE) (estrogen) week 2: 0.215mg norgestimate 0.035mg ethinyl estradiol week 3: 0.250mg norgestimate 0.035mg ethinyl estradiol week 4: placebo - "sugar pills" In CILEST there is: 3 weeks of: 0.250mg norgestimate 0.035mg ethinyl estradiol 1 week: placebo So my question… [cont.]

A. You won't need to use extra protection. Technically, if you switch to a pill with a higher estrogen (ethinyl estradiol is the synthetic name for it) level in you don't need to use extra protection. You do however if you switch to a pill where the levels of estrogen are lower... To do withte ovaries needing to reajust and 'switch off again'. FYI, i'm pretty sure the Ortho-Tri-Cyclen pill is better for skin than the Cilest just a head-up (been on it, infact been on most pills by now lol). I though Cilest was pretty good though.

Switching birth control from tri-sprintec to ortho tri-cyclen lo?
Q. My insurance decided to no longer cover me and i was forced to go to planned parenthood for birth control. While i was with my insurance they had me on Tri-Sprintec (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol tablets-triphasic regimen)(28). Now I will be switching to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol)(28) Has anyone had any complications doing this? Will it affect the effectiveness of the pills as I'm making the switch? How will this affect my sex drive/mood/period? Does one contain less estrogen than the other or is one the generic for the other?
Asked by missinformed - Wed Sep 10 19:23:49 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It has the exact same amount of Norgestimate and they both have 35mg of estrogen. So they are the exact same combination of hormones only difference is most likely fillers and the company name. So no complications no change in effectiveness, no difference in sex/mood/period change. They are both also triphasic pills so basically the same exact thing

Taking Ortho Tri-cyclen and not using a condom.?
Q. I have been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen (Norgestimate/Ethinyl Estradiol) for the past three months now and I have been with only one guy for 2 years (1 year as friends). We are both each others first high school sweet hearts and now we live together. We talked about having sex and me going on the pill because I am allergic to latex condoms. We checked if we both had STD s and are cleaned. We waited after 7 days and after that we ve been at it only on Saturday nights. I always take the pill every morning at 7:28 am and never miss a day nor time. We do the pull out method a lot but one night we didn t and now I am worried. I always start my period at the first of every month and I am waiting for my next one with worries. Can I still get… [cont.]

A. First of all, the pull out method doesn't work, there are still pre ejaculatory fluids that come out of the penis before the climax.. you have no more worry now then when you did that. Second, oral contraceptives are usually in the 99.8 percentile of effectiveness, it's highly highly unlikely you're pregnant. If you're late with your period it's more likely a side effect of the tri-cyclen

Is there a birth control pill that is less likely to give you spider veins than others?
Q. I started taking Apri (desogestrel, ethinlyl estradiol) at 22 and shortly after developed a large varicose vein on my leg. I didn't immediately connect the 2 things and went off of it when my prescription ran out a year later. I resumed taking a similar pill (Cyclessa-same active ingredients) and my spider veins started to darken again and I noticed a few small new ones. Now, I've been taking Yaz (drosperenone and ethinyl etradiol) for a month and I've seen some darkening again. I am considering Ortho Tri Cyclen (norgestimate, ethinyl estradiol). Will this be a better option?

Birth control pill question?
Q. My doctor recently put my on birth control due to my irregular and painful periods. I am about to start taking MonoNessa (same thing as Ortho-Cyclen and contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol). I am slightly worried about side effects because I have seen some negative reviews. Also I have heard from some people that it treats acne and i have also heard that it makes it worse. What side effects can I expect? Also, is it true that this medication makes your breasts bigger? Also, anyone who also takes this, your personal experience with the medication would be appreciated.

Source of birth control compounds?
Q. Okay, I just got in an argument with someone about the pus and blood content of milk (as a result of factory farming induced mastitis) and to be difficult she told me that the compounds in birth control pills comes from the urine of horses that are kept pregnant nearly their whole lives. I take ortho tri-CYCLEN Lo. Sooo, are the norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol derived from pregnant mare urine?

If this is the first time you are taking birth control pills or if you have not taken birth control pills for 10 days or more your first step is to wait until the first
