A. Please specify which of the mao-inhibitors picimilon, as you call it, this agent is, as I'm not familiar with it, neither by trade or generic name, so I don't even know if it binds covalently or not.

Why does using MAOI inhibitors react badly with most medications that come out?
Q. I see on commercials and medical journals that you shouldn't take medication if you use an MAOI inhibitor. What would happen if you take a medication while using one?
Asked by Khristophoros the Wise - Sun Apr 16 01:33:26 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. MAO-I can be taken safely with most medications. It is only certain classes of medication. Combined use of non-selective MAO inhibitors or MAO-A inhibitors and serotonergic drugs, such as SSRIs or MDMA and other phenylethylamines, is likely to lead to serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome can also occur, when combining MAOIs with certain opioids such as meperidine. However, other analgesics as morphine and codeine have been used safely with MAOIs. see for more information.

Research: Any MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) that hasn't been studied yet?
Q. I'm doing a biochemistry project on MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) and I'm trying to find a substance that could be an MAOI but hasn't been determined to be one. I'll be comparing the kinetics of Nardil, a known MAOI, and the kinetics of something that could be an MAOI. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A. St John's Wort? It has MAOI properties, whether it has been properly tested I'm not sure. I has a lot of the same side effects I know that! Good Luck!

A. Well, I can give you a little information about them. They're powerful, dangerous and they work like nothing else on this planet. A study done a while ago on the gimpiest of the MAOIs called Emsam (selegiline administered through the skin) came up with a staggering 78% success rate in treating atypical and resistant depression. ECT can't do that. The effectiveness of these drugs are equalled only by the fear around them. There's a certain aura of terror that surrounds a drug which every other medication on the planet says "Do not mix with". Don't get me wrong, the MAOIs aren't evil, but there's a price associated with their potency. It's ironic, because if you ignore the list of medication and foods that you can't take (and I could… [cont.]

Does anyone have any experience with MAOi-s?
Q. I haven't had continuous success with other group AD's so this time i decided to try something that will work for certain. I knew it has to be something toxic, something industrial... so the first thing that came in my mind was the MAOi-s. There is Parnate and Aurorix available where i live, what would you suggest? Are the food regulations really so bad: no coffee, no chees no alcohol?

A. Yes the food stuff is really strict. You cannot have mold, so you cannot have fruit that has mold or might have mold like berries. See if your doctor can try something else on you. If you are not seeing a psychiatrist see one. They can help you more.
